What is a Velvet Burnout?

A velvet burnout fabric has been through a special process where some of the fibers have literally been “burned” off with a special chemical, giving it a sheer, mesh-like appearance. So according to what the pattern is, some areas of the fabric remain thick and velvety, while the rest of the pattern that has been through the burnout process is light and sheer. Some burnouts look completely sheer with just a little bit of the velvet pile, while some look thicker with just a little bit of a burnout effect.
