| Ironing And Steaming Silk |
Ironing your printed silk fabric can be a little scary. Silk is know to be a little bit delicate. Fear of burning a newly acquired dress or shirt has kept many from trying the process at home.
Fear not there is a way. the trick is to be gentle. If you plan on using An iron make sure you have plenty of water in the iron and make sure that it is set on Silk. if you are brave go ahead and iron the garment. If you are cautious try another method. turn the iron to full steam and heat and find yourself a white cotton towel or rag. Dampen the rag and wring it out. Place it flat on the surface of the garment. Now gently press and lift the iron on top of the the towel. Do not press and move the garment back and forth. Silk responds well to pressure low temperature and humidity when ironing. So keep the towel moving to the next section and the iron pressing.
Most people will shy away from the iron if they can. Steaming is the safest method. If you are lucky enough to have a one. I like to work top to bottom and either use my hand and fingers to spread out the material as I move along. Working from top to bottom allows the steam to rise and worm the section that you have already worked on. this allows you to keep the section worm and damp. Work fast though a steamer can easily make a dry silk garment into a wet one that is not ready to wear. If you are having trouble with a section return to it later. Try to give the whole garment a once over and return to problem sections.
Well there it is. happy Ironing, steaming and silking.
